Series of the school: Sinew Metamorphosis (Yi Jin Jing)
A series of exercises of the Shaolin tradition, distinct from the Eighteen Hands and the Eighteen Arts. From it come the forms chosen for Doors X, XI, and XII: The Immortal Cleanses His Eyes, The Sacred Tree Spreads Its Branches, and The Immortal Touches the Sky.
The practices that come from this series
| Door | Practice | What the book notes |
|---|---|---|
| X | The Immortal Cleanses His EyesOf the Love That Keeps Vigil | At this door: to cleanse my eyes before deciding. |
| XI | The Sacred Tree Spreads Its BranchesOf the Spiral of the Saints | I received this practice together with the image of a tree: its roots, its growth, and the passing of the seasons. |
| XII | The Immortal Touches the SkyOf Permission | The image that goes with the movement is that of wanting to climb onto parallel bars you can barely reach. |
Opening, exercise, and closing
The practices share an opening and a closing. Between them lies the exercise I have chosen for each door.
The exercises belong to different series of my school: the Eighteen Lohan Hands, the Eighteen Lohan Arts, the Eighteen Jewels, and the Sinew Metamorphosis. Gathering them here does not make them a single traditional series.
The choice, frequency and repetitions of each form are learned with the instructor. The narrative order of the doors does not prescribe the same practice for everyone, nor does it require all thirteen exercises in one session.
